Biology 220 Lecture #11 – Energy Basics – 10/2/07 ENERGY BASICS ENERGY – (3) Why do organisms need energy? o Active transport – Excretion processes Use ATP to pump an ion or molecule against gradient that requires an input of energy o Chemical Reactions Not all are spontaneous Turn chemicals into things that we can use Expend energy o Generate Metabolic Heat Requires energy Maintain body heat Energy needy processes ENERGY – (4) Physics review from biological perspective Work – requires the use of energy Energy is considered stored – potential energy Kinetic energy – energy of motion Potential energy – creating a potential force Goes from stored, potential energy Kinetic energy (being released) ENERGY – (5) Gravitational potential energy Spontaneous Goes from more potential energy to less potential energy Not spontaneous Going from low potential energy to high potential energy

ENERGY – (6) When we are making ATP we are capturing chemical energy in ATP forcing chemical energy into a small space Strong bond High amount of potential energy stored in it Coiled spring High potential energy Break strong bond Releasing a lot of energy ENERGY – (7-8) Trapping energy in bonds Putting a lot of potential energy in glucose bonds Breaking bonds releases energy Transforming and transporting energy in terms of oxidation-reduction o L.E.O the lion goes G.E.R o Electrons are packets of energy o We can move them from molecule to molecule and as we move them we are changing the potential energy of different molecules o Put electron on a molecule getting potential energy o Take electron away Losing potential energy by releasing energy during transfer process o This is the way we are transferring and trapping energy in the processes of respiration and photosynthesis ENERGY – (9) Laws of Thermodynamics o 1 st Law: Total energy in the universe is constant Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change forms Capture energy from the sun and turn it into chemical energy Take chemical energy and transport it in the form of an electron NOT MAKING NEW ENERGY o 2 nd Law: Entropy of the universe is increasing Disorder increases over time In order to create some level of organization, it requires some input of energy Generating cell structure – requires input of energy
