How water works on an ecosystem/community level - topic Water is an important fundamental niche axis for all organisms, affects all cellular processes o Fundamental niche axis – water is something that every organism absolutely needs to survive o Where an organism lives, the temperatures that it can withstand – depend on this “axis of water” – fundamental to survive! Ecological communities will have different species, depending on water availability. CLIMATE – 3 ( no title ) Why should biologists study climate? o Environment has strong influence on the distribution and abundance of organisms o Environment has two components: Abiotic – physical, non-living, component (Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere) Lithosphere – The ground Hydrosphere – The water Atmosphere – The air All of these things make up the hydrogeologic environment that an organism lives in. Biotic – Biological or living component (Biosphere) Any organism that is dropped onto a mass of land is going to have to interact with these physical, non-living components, but also interact with all of the biological, living components on the same land mass as well. o Climate – is the abiotic component of the environment that consists of long- term weather patterns – Longterm weather patterns Interaction of air and water in the atmosphere

CLIMATOLOGY – 4 ( no title ) Studying Climatology – interested in two things: o Temperature o Moisture Why is it wet or dry in any location? o Major number 1 reason for BOTH temperature and moisture is solar input The Earth is a sphere o The angle of incidence of the incoming solar rays causes the energy to be spread out over a greater area nearer to poles The angle of incidence is the angle at which solar rays are coming at the Earth o Polar regions are going to receive less solar energy per unit area than the tropics CLIMATOLOGY – 5 ( no title ) Places on Earth Receive Unequal Amounts of Solar Energy o If the solar light is shone at the center of the earth, you get a direct hit of light, and the light spreads out over a certain distance. o If the light is shone up above the center of the earth, you are changing the angle of incidence of some of these rays of light – you are able to shine more light on the surface of the sphere because the earth is curving away from the light and that’s where the light rays can hit it. The same amount of light is shone over a greater area Because you are shining that light over a larger region, the light is less concentrated per unit area so there is less area hitting the globe.
