BIOLOGY 220 LECTURE #10 – Biomes BIOMES – 2 ( no title ) Biome is a set of communities of organisms. o Multiple populations of multiple organisms coexisting in the same place o They tend to have the characteristic appearance of organisms (convergence of form) All of the mammals that live in a certain area are going to have certain similar characteristics All of the plants that live in a certain area are going to have certain similar characteristics DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE ALL THE SAME SPECIES! Convergence on form – all of the trees in the rain forest are real big o Distributed over a wide land area Distributed over a whole area of latitude Across all whole chunk of longitude o Defined by a regional variation in climate Weather patterns that are defined on that latitude gradient and in the local areas based on mountain chains and nearest body of water BIOMES – 3 ( no title ) Temperature and precipitation play a really vital role in determining where biomes are distributed in the world GRAPH: temperature versus precipitation o Use convergence of temperature and precipitation patterns to figure out what kind of vegetation/life is living in these areas.
