McKitrick 1Sammy McKitrickDr. Bradley BuchnerSOC-10116 April 2021Sociological Imagination and Current SocietySocial imagination is a term coined by contemporary sociologist C. Wright Mills in hisinsightful book, The Social Imagination. He described this concept as “awareness of therelationship between a person’s behavior and experience and the wider culture that shaped theperson’s choices and perceptions” (Griffiths). He urged sociologists to question why people actedthe way they did, to remove one’s self from the picture and view problems on a wider, morecritical scope. He believed that all personal issues were deep rooted somewhere else withinsociety. With this idea, Mills reformed the studies of earlier sociologists, has been used to betterunderstand current societal issues, and has been observed in current public policies.Sociology is the observation of groups of individuals in a societal setting to find thepattern in their combined actions. They search to understand why people do the things they do.In his writings, Mills pushed sociologists to question the “why”. He felt that sociology at thetime was so set in the rigidity of scientific study rather than humanity aspects and suggested thatthey function as individuals and challenge social norms (Brinks).
