Nikhil Sen 4/1/08 22875165 Biology of Social Issues Extra Credit Assignment Precocious Puberty Recent studies show that American girls are reaching puberty up to a year earlier than previous generations. Some are even showing signs of sexual development; such as budding breasts as early as the age of three. This unnaturally early puberty is called precocious puberty and is based on early stages of sexual development found in girls around the age of 8 and boys around the age of 9. Children with this disorder tend to grow very fast at first, but also stop growing at a much younger age. If a young boy suffering from precocious puberty is not treated he will most likely not grow taller than 5 feet 2 inches, while a young girl may not reach over 5 feet. The biological cause of this is the release of gonadotropin hormones that are released from the pituitary gland. These hormones are responsible for stimulating the gonads and producing sex hormones, resulting in maturity and development. There are various potential causes to this disorder, some of which are preventable.
