Kyoto Protocol – 1997 o The world's primary international agreement on combating global warming o an amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) o Countries that ratify this protocol commit to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases o Developing countries are exempt from meeting emission standards in Kyoto This includes China and India , the second and third largest emitters of CO 2 , behind the United States . Unanswered questions – clouds, ocean productivity, loss of ice caps Deforestation o Deforestation is often cited as one of the major causes of the enhanced greenhouse effect . o cause the destruction of the habitats that support this biological diversity
