Lab 11: Specific Heat David Liu April 22, 2015 Individual Report Physics 2A Group 3 Group Members: Mohammad Hussain Juliet Sanchez Daniel Belmar PURPOSE:
This experiment will allow students to experiment the specific heat of three unknown metals and to identify what type of metal it is. Each metal has its own unique specific heat and thus allowing students to identify the metal used. EQUIPMENT: 1. Metal stand with clamp. 2. Insulator 3. Two aluminum can 4. Stirrer 5. Bunsen burner or hot plate 6. Three unknown metal blocks 7. Water 8. Measuring tool a. Thermometer PROCEDURE: The experiment will consist of boiling water in one of the larger cans with the metal stand set up so the metal block can be hung on the bar, while immersed in the boiling water. Set up the metal stand, and start boiling water on the hot plate into the aluminum can. Measure the weight of each individual metal blocks, since they are composed of different elements, the weight of each will be different, record the mass of the metals as m 1 , m 2 , and m 3 . While it is boiling, add enough water to the smaller aluminum can that will fit into the insulator. Weigh the amount of water that is in this can and record it as m s
