Oxidative Induction Time (OIT) TestOIT is the time required for the geomembranes test specimen tobe oxidized under a specific pressure and temperalure. Since theantioxidants protect the geomembrane from oxidation, the OITvalue indicates the amount of antioxidant remaining in the testspecimen (Hsuan and Koerner 1998).The OIT tests were performed in accordance to ASTM D3895(Standard Oxidative Induction TimeSdt-OIT) which uses adifferential scanning calorimeter (DSC) with a specimen test cellthat can sustain a 35 kPa ginige pressure. The specimen is heatedfrom room temperature to 20()oC at a heating rate of 20°C/minunder a nitrogen atmosphere. At 2(X)°C an isothermal condition ismaintained for 5 min and the nitrogen gas is changed by theoxygen gas. The test is finished when an exothermal peak occurs(oxidation of material). The minimum OIT value required is 100minutes. For instance, the Fig. 2 shows a result obtained in aHDPE geomenibrane. In this case, the OIT value obtained was8.11 minutes.
