Maia Kazaks December 4, 2007 Ling 106 Gordon F07 Final Project Sounds of Latvian: Inventory Introduction: The Latvian language is the Indo-European Eastern descendant spoken primarily in the Baltic state of Latvia by over 1.5 million people. Over one hundred thousand of these speakers live outside Latvia in countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, USA and Venezuela. (from SIL Ethnologue) Uldis Balodis, my native speaker for this project, has spoken Latvian since the time he began speaking. His parents and family used Latvian as he was growing up. He later learned English when he was 5 years old, and so is a true native speaker. He is able to read and write in Latvian and speaks with his remaining relatives in Latvian when they talk. He also reads news pages in Latvian to keep his skills sharp, and recently has been reading Latvian folk tales. Uldis writes in either language- the one that seems appropriate to the content of the discourse.
