It is a writer’s choice todecide which approach to use depending on their purpose for writing.When a writerchooses to narrate an incident that happened to them, they are sharing somethingpersonal to make a connection with their audience. Narratives can help readers get in awriter’s skin and feel sympathy/empathy for the writer. They can be an educational toolto learn what life is like for others. Readers can see, hear, taste, feel, and smell what awriter went through as they vicariously experience an event. Therefore, narratives canact as a catalyst for understanding and change. In this class, your first graded essay willbe an account of something that happened to you. You will want to convince yourreader, through your details, to care about what you are writing about, to care aboutyou.You will be writing a five-paragraph essay using the format of a narrative aboutsomething powerful that happened to you.The reason for learning about the elements and structure of a narrative is becausestories often give people insight into what another person’s experience is. Scholarshipcommittees and universities often ask students to “tell about a time when. . .” in theirapplication essays because they want to learn about students beyond their GPA or clubparticipation. Of course, sharing something emotional can sometimes make studentsuncomfortable. Keep in mind that your emotional experience does not have to be sad orembarrassing. You do not have to share something that makes you feel uncomfortable orawkward. You can write about a triumphant experience, for example. Choose wiselywhen considering which experience to write about in class once I show you some topicsto choose from and have a backup experience in case the first one that comes to mind istoo intense for you. Indeed, the first step is seeing the topics and deciding which topic toselect.
