A Case Study of the Nintendo Wii BUS 284 Team #2 Company History Nintendo Company Ltd., initially named Nintendo Koppai, was founded September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi and produced handmade hanafuda cards (“flower cards.”) Yamauchi goal was to enhance playing cards and decided to produce handcrafted cards painted on mulberry tree bark. Yamauchi’s creation eventually caught on and became used countrywide in gaming parlors, and card games again became popular in Japan. In 1963, Nintendo realized its limitations in only producing playing cards and decided to expand. Its first action of business was to change its name to Nintendo Company, Limited. During the company’s experimentation period from 1963 to 1966, several business niches were attempted but were unsuccessful. Their first effort was converting themselves into a taxi company. They next transformed themselves into a love hotel chain only to later switch to TV network and food company. After several failed attempts at different business niches, Nintendo decided to evolve into a toy company in 1966. Nintendo’s most selling toy during this period was the Ultra Hand. The Ultra Hand was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, a Nintendo maintenance employee turned engineer, who became fascinated with creating toys and created the Ultra Hand as a personal project. The Ultra Hand, an extendable claw designed to reach out and grab items, was a huge success in Japan selling over 1.2 million. Despite the fact Nintendo produced many popular toys, they were unable to compete with their competitors’ development and turnaround time that eventually cause them to fall behind other well-established companies.
