Iris Tu ANS 301R Essay 3 – Zhuangzi and Death Reactions, attitudes, and thoughts about the subject of death vary throughout the cultures and religions throughout the world. In the common tradition in the Christian world, rites of penance, absolution, anointing, and communion were used to “help cut the ties that bound the dying to this world…preparing them for entry into paradise.” In other words, death was just a path one had to travel to “go to somewhere better.” In Chinese traditions, death was the “passing from this world into the ancestral realm” that held reciprocal relationships between the living and the dead ancestors. To Zhuangzi (or Zhuang Zhou), a Taoist philosopher in 4 th century China, however, death was just another passage in the illusion that is life. In his self-titled book, Zhuangzi , this could be seen a short story of when he dreamed he was a butterfly and woke up only to find himself not knowing if it was
