Ch. 13 Essays and Critical Thinking 45. Down Syndrome is caused by a nondisjuntion of chromosome 21 that results in three copies of that chromosome. Characteristics of this disorder include a wide, flat face as well as narrow slanting eyelids. Often time’s mental retardation accompanies the disorder. 47. Fragile X-syndrome is caused by an inheritance of an abnormal x-chromosome in males and results in the base coding CGC to be repeated an abnormal amount of times. This can also occur in females but the symptoms are not as severe as those seen in males. The characteristics of this include as children hyperactivity or autism, delayed speech, and a repetitive nature. As the individual grows they have large protruding ears, long narrow face with a protruding jaw, also have stubby hands. Many may also have a heart defect as well as lax joints. 48.
