-form of print (1450s - ) -came over with the Mayflower -early books: religious in nature -a religious book: Psalms -1640, first book is printed in America -1st American library by Ben Franklin -big factor in book sales growth = increased literacy --> use of textbooks in public schools (increased txtbook sales) --> increased schooling --> increased literacy -saw the most successful mail-order book club -club members were sent a book by mail every month; interest was mostly in fiction -1926 saw increase in book sales and led to creation of book of the month club -1939 saw popularization of paperbacks (known as "pocket books" because they actually fit in a jacket pocket) -increased book sales further (cheaper prices) -cheap, huge selection of books, ability to buy used books -creation of online bookstores in modern times (Amazon.com, Borders.com) -led to chain discount bookstores (Borders, B&N, etc) -real interest began in 20th Century (1900s) Books -the difference between reading a book physically and reading a book off a screen
