Lecture 1: 19     th     Century     1. Important documents  Declaration of Independence 1776 , Constitution 1787  didn’t initially apply to women and  African-Americans. 3/5     th     Compromise      (slaves count ass 3/5 of a person when censuses  are taken. This helped the south gain strength in the Electoral College) 1789 brought  south with plantations on equal terms. Naturalization Act  1790 granted 1 year free of  citizenship for anyone 21 or older and white.  2. Second Protestant Revival (1800-1840) Urged sinner to recognize sin, embrace individual conversion, and forge relationship  between self and God. This was a time period which promoted the idea to return  religious passion and worth from educated/rich to common people. It also connected that  slavery is morally wrong. 3.
