Joe Pucci Hist 384 Final Exam December 13, 2008 Question 1, Answer C May of 1968 was a very tumultuous time for in many sectors of the world . Indeed, the  time had come where people were actually becoming aware of their surroundings, and they had  something to say about them . This was particularly true in France. France had been under the  regime of General Charles de Gaulle . Although many in France praised his political actions  during his reign in the fifth republic, there was a large contingent of young people and workers  who did not agree with de Gaulle’s political ideals . They felt the government was restrictive on  them . The restrictive nature of the country pervaded many aspects, including the media, which  had a monopoly ownership by the government . A meeting between Franz Fanon, Tariq Ali, and  Ralf Dahrendorf in the Latin Quarter of Paris at this time would have put these three dynamic  figures right in the center of the uprisings that were occurring . In seeing a sign reading “France  is an Incomplete Democracy,” all three would have had their own view on the statement, as well  as an understanding of the context of the statement in the setting in which they were all in . Frantz Fanon was a French colonial who was a revolutionary in his work . He believed in  decolonization, and in many ways believed in such “Third World” ideals as socialism and

humanism . One of his most significant works was his book  The Wretched of the Earth . In this  book, he writes about the role of class, race, and violence in the struggle for national liberation
