Siming Zhu September 17, 2008 AEM 4420 – Emerging Markets Case Summary: Subcontinental Telecommunications Solutions World Wide Telecommunications’ (WWT) original intentions in forming the joint venture with Subcontinental Software Solutions (SSS) was to build a stronger relationship between the western and Indian firm, as well as to reduce WWT’s exposure to risks regarding software piracy. Despite taking such precautions, WWT still found itself in the middle of a long line of problems, ranging from sexual harassment to software piracy. The underlying problem behind the joint venture’s bumpy start is the conflict stemming from a clash of two cultures that have very different legal and behavioral standards. While American culture takes a very strict interpretation of what constitutes as sexual harassment, an equally conservative interpretation may not hold for India’s male dominant culture.
