Exercise ---Due Wednesday, November 7 (in class) Experimental Research Read Baxter and Babbie’s discussion of experimental design (chapter 9). Your assignment is to conduct a brief experiment to test whether people respond positively or negatively to the way you ask “How are you?” You will use as subjects at least ten people that you come across on campus (or elsewhere), and you will put them into two groups as follows: Group 1: For at least five people, allow them first to ask you how you are, and then reply saying, “Great, how are you?” Record exactly how they answer. Group 2: For at least five other people, allow them first to ask you how you are, and then reply by saying, “Terrible, how are you?” Record exactly how they answer. Score each of the responses people gave you as whether “positive,” “negative,” or “neutral,” and then tally up the numbers of positive, neutral, and negative comments received from each group.
