Jarett Banks 1848958 JFB39 AEM 222.2 Two Page Summary The Individual and the Corporation: E*Trade April 23, 2008 On August 11, 1999 E*Trade COO Kathy Levinson was queried for her support of the “Knight Initiative” also known as Proposition 22. This proposition was a California ballot measure that sought to recognize marriages only between a man and a woman. The Knight Initiative struck close to home for Levinson, who was the lesbian mother of two children co-adopted with her life partner. This was an important issue for E*Trade as well as Levinson’s career at the 3 rd largest online brokerage. The first alternative for Levinson is to make anonymous contributions and support to the gay community. By giving money, the community could raise awareness about the issue and hopefully offset the number of opposed California residents. This is a solid career move for Levinson because her name wont be tied to the controversial topic. More important, however, is the fact that E*Trade will have no corporate association with the problem at hand. An anonymous contribution on the behalf of Levinson protects the business interests of all parties involved. There are several problems with Levinson’s anonymous donation. The first, and most important, controversy is that the gay community needs more than financial backing. In order to overcome such a monumental proposition, the community needs the moral and personal backing of powerful figures like Levinson.
