Earthquake 13 October 25, 2007 Locating earthquakes - 3 main methods of locating earthquakes o Locate surface faulting. But some earthquakes don’t cause surface faulting Some faults that reach the surface don’t always experience surface  faulting in small to moderate magnitude earthquakes <6.5 o Most people use the location of maximum damage Generally gives a reasonable idea of region of earthquake but  damage intensity is controlled by lots of factors, not just eq size and  location. The 1985 Michocean earthquake – magnitude 8.5 (mexico  city) proves that the place of max. damage doesn’t have to be  where the actual earthquake takes place. This eq was over  400 km away.  December 8 1812 earthquake showed that damage can be  done far from SAF. Found by observing trees.  December 21 1812 earthquake occurred on the thrust fault,  shows that the “felt earthquake” theory isn’t very accurate
