Earthquakes 18 November 16 2007 Chile Subduction zone earthquake on November 15, 7.7 Mw. Reverse fault.  Mw 9.5 1000km subduction megathrust. 50m slip rupture from near the surface to 50 km deep.  Subduction megathrust earthquakes occur in the slab. (graph) Stress from one earthquake can trigger another earthquake. Happened in salton sea example  where San jacinto fault and Elmore ranch fault were involved. (graph) 1 st  earthquake relieved  the normal stress and caused the 2 nd  earthquake to occur.  Coulomb’s failure function stress changes (how close is one fault to failing (rupturing)) - How does stress change from 1 earthquake influence occurrences of future  earthquakes - (Delta-sigma-shear) + (delta-sigma-mu) (sigmamu) = (deltaCFF) o The change in failure stress on a fault is equal to the change in shear stress
