Stewart Foundations and Earth Structures Winter, 2009 Assignment 3 DUE JANUARY 27, 2009 Design of Prefabricated Vertical Drains The results for Assignment No. 1 (now posted on the web site) are that 15 feet of fill is required to reach the desired elevation of +10 feet MSL. Without site improvement, the settlement is projected to occur slowly, with 50% occurring after about 20 years, and 95% after about 100 years. This rate of settlement is unacceptably slow because the settlement will likely be non- uniform. This non-uniform settlement pattern could result in an uneven runway surface hazardous to landing or departing jets. Accordingly, you decide to recommend mitigation of the settlement problem by designing a vertical drain system to accelerate the rate of settlement. 1. Re-plot the settlement vs. time results from Assignment No. 1 on a figure. If you answer to this part of Assignment No. 1 was incorrect, identify your mistake and plot the correct curve. Label the figure “Figure 4.1: Estimated settlement vs. time for fill section.”
