Kenny Room: Monteith 143 Associate Professor of Journalism 2 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Office: 412 Arjona Tuesday and Thursday 486.4865 (my office) 486.4221 (Journalism Department office) Office hours: M&W, 3 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. & by appointment Text: “The Media in America, A History,” Seventh edition; by William David Sloan News, American style: Not so long ago it was simply called “the press.” Today it’s “the media,” a complicated, multi-headed industry that provides a constant stream of news, views, photos, video images, text messages and more at a speed that often blurs what we hear, see and read. News is everywhere; it refuses to stand still. And in its relentless pace, the American version of news constantly reminds us of what it so often is not: thoughtful, precise and considerate of other cultures or views. In its rush to be first, news can be wrong. Despite its many flaws, however, the American media remains the most open, useful and fairest in the world. How did the American media arrive at today’s consumer-driven news marketplace? This survey course will provide an overview of the American news media, covering its historical, ethical and legal beginnings. It will describe journalism’s princes and villains, highlight current media trends and outline the reasons for how and why our system of information gathering has evolved.
