Chapter 15—Treatment of psychological disorders [book notes] ELEMENTS OF THE TREATMENT PROCESS 50% of people seek treatment Only about half reached the criteria for a full fledged mental disorder Women seek treatment more than men People with insurance seek treatment more People of higher education seek treatment more Psychologists:  doctoral training (PH.D, Psy.D. etc.) Clinical:  trained to treat full-fledged disorders (schizophrenia) Counseling:  trained to treat every day problems (marriage counseling) Psychiatrists:  physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological  disorders (medical doctor, MD)  can prescribe drugs.  Psychiatrists also treat everyday behavioral problems but focus more on severe  disorders. Clinical social workers—master’s degree, work with patient and family to ease integration of  patient back into society. Psychiatric nurses—bachelor’s or master’s degree, play large role in hospital inpatient  treatment.  Counselors—usually master’s degree, work in schools, college and assorted human service  agencies. INSIGHT THERAPIES Psychoanalysis:  insight therapy that emphasizes the recovery of unconscious conflicts,  motives, and defenses through techniques such as free association and transference.  Analyst  tries to find unresolved conflict in the unconscious. Free association:  clients spontaneously express their thoughts and feelings exactly as  they occur, with as little censorship as possible. Dream analysis:  therapist interprets the symbolic meaning of the client’s dreams.  Therapist must analyze symbolism in dreams to interpret meaning. Interpretation:
