Humanities 111.01 February 1, 2008 THE AEGEAN: THE CONTACT POINT OF THE ANCIENT WORLD - myceneans created a very fierce, militaristic society because of their  vulnerability - Spartans = warrior aristocracy  - Cycladic islands – Cycladic culture o Dependant on the sea (trade, fishing, defense) - Greece is only the size of Louisiana (always only 40 miles from the sea) o No big rivers – only streams, creeks etc o Extremely mountainous  o Because of geography, Greece was never unified Cycladic Culture: - Cycladic idols – made of marble (main body of the land) o All are females o “In situ” = in place; found in tombs o Not intended to stand up; scale: ½ inch to almost lifesize – depends  on age and wealth o Created for inclusion in the tomb o Served as guides to the underworld/afterlife; potentially placed face  down looking towards the underworld o Only women dealt with dead bodies
