Chapter 8- Environmental Policy and Politics for the Twenty –First Century (241-256) The third generation focus of environmentalism- Sustainable Development extending into global environmentalism. First generation focus- Air, Water and remedies to stop the degredation. Second generation focus- efficiency, flexibility, cooperation between government and industry, use of market incentives, information disclosure. Sustainable Development o Is hard to see because policy makers usually operate in short term policy areas. o In June of 1993 President Clinton used an executive order to create the President’s Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD) They helped link short term goals with long term goals. “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” Business and the Environment o The “greening” of some companies owes much of it’s stimulation to federal
