The goal of this experiment was to use various techniques that we have learned, such as filtration and titration and to apply them to form acetate salicylic acid, otherwise known commonly as aspirin. Aspirin is formed from the esterification of acetic anhydride and salicylic acid, along with the byproduct, acetic acid. The reaction is catalyzed by sulfuric acid. The goal of the experiment was definitely achieved as the product we formed was definitely close to aspirin. The phenol test proved that our product was different from the original salicylic acid because the FeCl 3 used in the test checks for the presence of a phenol group. Phenols combine with the Fe 3+ ion from FeCl 3 in order to form a purple complex. When our aspirin product was placed in FeCl 3 , the color was yellow, which means no phenol group existed in our product. Phenols do not exist in aspirin, but are part of the structure of salicylic acid, one of the reactants in the formation of aspirin. Although the product we formed was close to aspirin, the percent yield of the aspirin product was not very good, with only 15 +/- 1 percent yield. There were many errors that contributed to this low percent yield. For example, the volume of acetic anhydride used to react could have been less than the one recorded because acetic anhydride is very unstable and is hygroscopic. Therefore, while adding the sulfuric acid, the reaction flask was not covered immediately and some acetic anhydride could have reacted with the air. This would result in less
