Why are invasive species a problem? Negatively impact native species in a number of ways. Eating, competing, interbreeding, & introducing new pathogens or diseases. May change the species composition of the ecosystem and therefore alter fire regimes, hydrology, nutrient cycling, and productivity. Unlike other pollutants because unchecked populations of biological invaders are likely to grow in numbers over time, even if new introductions are restricted.
