Michael Guertin BUAD 307 November 14, 2008 Preliminary Assignment Option #1 EZ Sleep Alarm Clock: Secondary Market Research Proposal : The EZ Sleep Alarm Clock relies on decreases in body temperature to calculate the proper amount of complete sleep cycles you can get in before you absolutely need to wake up. The premise is that you will be more awake after a full sleep cycle than you would sleeping another hour and not getting another fully cycle in. This product will help maximize your sleep, energy, and readiness to perform by waking up at the end of a full sleep cycle. Widespread Extent of Sleeping Problems In today’s 24-7 society, sleep is an essential commodity that is often neglected by many people who do not allocate enough time for sleep. In fact, based on research, the Washington Times (Widhalm, 2005) reports that 75% of U.S. adults have a symptom of a sleep problem. These problems can range from something as simple as not allowing sufficient time for sleep to more severe problems such as sleeping disorders. In addition to work shifts, long hours of work, and jet lag, health problems and usage of certain medications can cause sleep deprivation. Medical or psychological issues, in particular anxiety and depression, can cause sleeplessness. Insomnia, which is characterized by having difficulty falling asleep, maintaining sleep or waking too early, is the most common of the 85 recognized sleep disorders (Widhalm, 2005). Not only is the duration of sleep important, but also the quality of sleep that individuals receive is equally important. Paris University researchers say that “most of those with sleeping problems considered them to have an impact on their daily functioning, with family life most affected” (Dobson, 2008). disorders typically see their productivity diminish, their risk of accidents increase, and their everyday life negatively affected (Herscowitz, 2005). The National Sleep Foundation recommends nine hours of sleep daily, but U.S. adults average just 6.9 hours of sleep a night (Fenton, 2007). According to The Age (Melbourne, Australia), over half of Australia’s adult population suffers from insomnia and most students have sleepless nights during exams (Maslen, 2006). Additionally, many people compound their sleeping problems by not seeking help to improve their troubling sleeping patterns. Researchers found that almost half had never taken any steps to resolving them, and the majority had not spoken to a physician about their problems (Dobson, 2008). Although there currently are several solutions to sleeping problems, many of them do not truly cure the problem and some even have negative effects. The Science of Sleep
