Affordance- An idea in one’s head of how something works and the quality of an object that allows an individual to perform an action. Sometimes the map of the designer doesn’t relate to the user. The perceived and actual properties of an object. Visibility- The relationship between the brain and technology/information/design. Specifically, how information lines up with the brain. Feedback-sending back to the user information about what action has actually been done and what result has been accomplished. b. Light switch in dorm room (Affordance)-When one walks into my double dorm room, there are two light switches. Every time I walk into the room, I flip the switch on right because my light and bed are on the right of the room when you walk in. However this switch turns on the light on the left side of the room. With the concept of affordance, the right switch should turn on the right light, however this is not the case and thus the light switch in my room fails to meet the concept of affordance. Red light on stove (feedback)- At home, we have an electric stove. When you turn the knob for the appropriate burn a light on the knob turns red. The burner on the glass also turns red. The red color of the knob and the burner signal that the stove is indeed on and hot. I know which burner is on and that it is heating up. The red light tells me that task of turning on the stove has been accomplished. Airplane safety cards (visbility)-Whether flying to Florida to see family or to Arizona, I can never figure out the airplane safety cards. The information on the card never aligns with my mind. Sometimes there are no numbers on which safety steps to perform first such as to when to put the oxygen mask on and when to crouch in the seat. My understanding of these cards is poor due to lack of instructions and information. c. Safety on airplanes is imperative as so many people travel by them in today’s world. Because of this, it is important to improve the visibility of the safety card instructions. These simple instructions could possible save lives if an emergency situation were to occur. First, these safety cards should not be just placed in the pockets of the plane’s chairs. These should be attached to the back of seats at eye level so that they are visible to each person that is in a chair on the plane.
