What age is an infant? Up to 12 months of the babies life. Neonatal is the first month. Reflexes that babies have: Sucking, rooting (moving head back and forth), grasping,  Fenton reflex, Moro Reflex (when they feel like they’re falling they spread out their  arms).  Disappears as the cerebral cortex thickens and motor areas of the brain continue to  develop.  Infant brain development: develop myelination and dendrites and brain structure.  The brain doubles in weight by 1 year of age.  Psychological development (Erikson)—trust vs. mistrust Cognitive development (Piaget)—sensorimotor period Denver developmental screening test 2—screening tool birth to age 6. (Screen at 3  to 4 months, 10 months, 3 years.  Areas of development: Personal—social, fine motor adaptive, language, gross-motor.  CDC Growth charts—height, weight, head circumference. Infants organs don’t function like children or adults. Can’t detoxify alcohol.  Brain growth and differentiation are rapid during infancy.
