IntroductionAs Christ-followers, it is our ultimate purpose to live a life that spreads God’slove and truth of the Gospel with peoples of all nations. We are called to be Christ-like,and Jesus gives that mandate in The Great Commission (Matthew 28: 18-20), which is toreach and love people of all nations with the Good News.1Challenges to fulfilling thatcall are cultural differences that may alter or inhibit effective communication. As a wayof acknowledging and combatting this challenge, C. Tim Chang and Ashley Chang havewritten the book,Christian Intercultural Communication.The secular term, “intercultural communication,” is defined byStella Ting-Toomey and Leeva C. Chung as “The symbolic exchange process whereby individualsfrom two or more different cultural communities attempt to negotiate shared meanings inan inter-active situation within an embedded societal system.”2Tim Chang and AshleyChang take this a step further by defining Christian Intercultural Communication as beingthe salt and light of the world, and loving others even when we ourselves can’t fathomdoing so.3Critical ReviewThe main purpose of writing this book, as stated by the authors, is because theybelieve it is impossible to carry out God’s missionary work without Christian interculturalcommunication.4In their book, they strategically cover nine lessons of Christianintercultural communication, which seek to point God’s people to His amazing and1English Standard Version (Wheaton: Crossway, 2016)2Stella Ting-Toomey,Understanding Intercultural Communication,(New York,NY: Oxford University Press, Inc., 2012), 413C.
