Hoang 1 Phuong Hoang Chem 3105 – 541 9/24/08 Experiment 3: Recrystallization I. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to identify the unknown compounds isolated last week, using melting points of recrystallized materials. II. Background: Recrystallization is the cycle to make a compound from solid state to solution and back to solid state. The initial and final materials are crystalline. III. Procedure: 1. Take the crude mixture in a capillary and take its melting point. 2. Take the hydrocarbon (top layer) and add ethanol (1 ml). Heat it. 3. Add water (4 -5 drops) while cooling. 4. Filter the solid and put the filter paper on paper towels. 5. Take acid (bottom layer), add water (1 ml). Heat it. 6. Add ethanol (3 – 4 drops) while cooling 7. Filter it and put filter paper on paper towels. 8. Add solid from step 4 to capillary to take its melting point. Mix the solid with a little solid from melting point matched and take a mixed melting point.
