Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to measure the rate of the S N 1 reaction of t-butyl chloride (2-chloro-2-methylpropane) with water as the nucleophile and solvent. II. Background: The reaction of t-Butyl Chloride in water: III. Procedure: 1. Take a beaker, fill it with water and put a thermometer in it. 2. Take an Erlenmeyer/ beaker (25 ml) add 3 ml butyl chloride and in another Erlenmeyer/ beaker (25 ml) add .6ml NaOH and 6.4 water and 2 drops of bromphenol blue. 3. Put in water bath for 3 minutes. 4. Mix the contents and measure time of disappearance of color. 5. Repeat the experiments with other trials changing the volume according to table. 6. Plot. IV. Points to remember:
