Biology 202 Homework 8 Due: 11/6 or 11/7; in discussion Please type (not hand-write) ONLY the answers to question onto the question sheet itself (this sheet). Please highlight or otherwise indicate the parts that you have typed with italics , underlining or bold ing. All of these questions (except possibly #2 & #6) require additional working. The work done to answer the questions should not be on this sheet but instead attached to the back as supplemental pages. You must include all of your work pages. The supplemental work pages do not need to be typed 1. Review transition and transversion mutations and use the genetic code to answer the following questions: a. Why is it impossible to induce nonsense mutations by treating wild type organisms with mutagens that only cause A:T G:C transition mutation? (1 pt) The only way to mutate the DNA into DNA that codes for a stop codon with this mutation is for the mutation to occur at either the second or third nucleotide of DNA coding for the UAA codon. However, this DNA also codes for a stop codon. Stop codon UAA UAG UGA DNA TAA TA G T GA ATT AT C A CT b. Hydroxylamine (HA) is a mutagen that causes only G:C A:T transitions in DNA. Will HA induce nonsense mutations? (1 pt) Yes, these transition mutations can lead to nonsense mutations. (examples: DNA template AC C AC T or G TC→ A TC mRNA codon UGG (Trp) UGA (stop) CAG (Gln) UAG (stop) c. Will HA treatment revert nonsense mutations to original wild type codons? (1 pt)
