Ciphertext the encrypted version of the message. Encrypt or encipher to convert the cleartext to cipher text. Decrypt or decipher to convert the ciphertext to cleartext. A substitution cipher is a simple way of encrypting or encoding text to try and keep unwanted people from knowing the contents of a message. 8 Assignment 5 - Encryption Process To encrypt a message simply match the letter you are trying to encrypt with the top row and write down the letter directly below it from the bottom row.
