Hiu Yan Grace Kwok Section 35223R Assignment #2 February 13, 2008 Inter-racial Romance: Not For the Sake of Being Romantic Kumiko Nemoto’s critical text sheds light on how power has infiltrated into and constructed the inter-racial relationships between Asian American women and white American men. Interestingly, not only are the women interviewed aware of and submitting to the hierarchy existing in their relationships with their white partners, those women are actually utilizing this stereotype as the exotic and inferior “Other” strategically to counteract the oppression in their impoverished and patriarchal home countries, as well as to gain upward status and mobility. This “strategy of resistance” (Nemoto 43), in an attempt to subvert gender, racial and financial inequality, is yet another contribution to the consolidation of Eurocentric thinking and the reinforcement of white supremacy, in that those women think the union with white men is the solution to the problems they are facing.
