M. Farrell Matt Farrell October 7, 2006 Lab 4: Steam Distillation of Essential Oils Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to be proficient in using a steam distillation apparatus. The apparatus is much like the fractional distillation apparatus, but with slight variations. Essential oils will be used in the lab, and the purpose of that is to be able to distill them and separate out from other compounds. Background: Steam distillation includes an organic compound and water. It provides a means of distilling a slightly volatile compound at a temperature well below its atmospheric boiling point. Steam distillation is very effective for the isolation of volatile organic compounds. The essential oils that are used in this lab include cloves, cumin, and caraway. Clove oil is composed of mainly eugenol; other components will interfere with crystallization. Cumin derivates from dried fruit from a small shrub, found in Eastern Europe and India.
