Origin of Parliament: Council created of nobles, took more formal role -> House of Lords Knights -> House of Commons Magna Carta – Limit power of monarchy Martin Luther – Protestant Reformation o Henry VIII wanted a divorce but Pope said no so he created his own church 1640’s Charles I 1689 – Bill of Rights Glorious Revolution 1701 - Act of Settlement Sir Robert Walpole – 1800’s – Industrial revolution o More people eligible to vote o Time of communism and socialism Proletariat – Working class Bourgeoisie – Upper class o Middle class – Crucial for democracy! Unions Contribute more to society Thus want more out o Voting rights o Freedom of speech Geographically easier to develop democracy because it is an island Structure of Gov’t: House of Lords – Upper house but less power o Lords Hereditary – not anymore, can’t pass it on House of Commons – Majority party and minority party
