Grants play the part of providing funding for human service providers. Grants are often a large portion of the ongoing support for social services. They are critical to the continued success of many organizations, especially in small communities. The focus of the grantor must match the mission of the service organization. In rural areas nationwide, human services do not enjoy the tax base support that many metropolitan areas have. Therefore, grants are that much more essential to the provision of services and the overall mental and physical health of those in these small communities. Grants fund for specific periods and can only be used within the restrictions placed by the grantor. In some cases, grants are unrestricted and may be used for any valid expense that the organization has. Programs must carry out their record keeping responsibly so that grant reporting can take place and future grants be won. Some programs require higher levels of funding than others. For example, counseling and health care for at risk groups requires a lower input of resources than do disaster relief programs....
