Louis ArmstrongWhat A Wonderful WorldOctober 1967Composer: Bob ThieleThe history of jazz started in New Orleans, they were performed at “dance halls, barrelhouses, bordellos, streets of New Orleans, and the banks of Lake Pontchartrain.”(Lesson 4)Music was the focus of everyday life in New Orleans. With this the bands in New Orleans would try to enhance the influential styles of the era like “ragtime, blues, and brass band repertoire by “jazzing it up.””(Lesson 4) This was soon called New Orleans Jazz, which was based on collective improvisation. The New Orleans Jazz was mainly coming from the working class after their day’s work, mainly African-American skilled laborers. Most of them played by what they hear which then came the improvisation. During the time period African-Americans in New Orleans were having hard social environments in the south, so most of them moved towards Chicago. “In the 1920s, Chicago was the center of jazz, both old and new, So due to the recordings there, the style would be New Orleans style.”(Lesson 4)
