NUTRITION PROJECT GUIDELINES PURPOSE: The purpose of this project is to help you to better understand your general patterns of eating, focusing on the 1992 Food Pyramid, the fat and sugar content of your diet, and distribution of calories throughout the day. From this brief examination, you should be able to identify simple changes that you can make to improve the way in which you will eat for a lifetime. I. RECORD ALL FOODS AND BEVERAGES CONSUMED FOR 3 DAYS 1. Choose any 7 days that represent the way you typically eat. a. Be as specific as you can in identifying the food. Many times combination foods such as salads, sandwiches, etc. will have to be broken down into their component parts and recorded accordingly. b. Enter the amount (ounces, items, slices, pounds, cups, grams, etc.) of each food you ate. You will later transform these amounts into “serving sizes” c. Using the following designations, record the “meal” at which these foods were consumed. B = Breakfast M = Morning Snack L = Lunch A = Afternoon Snack D = Dinner E = Evening Snack II. Go to the following web site: www.mypyramid.gov This is a USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) web site called the Interactive Healthy Eating Index (IHEI) prepared by the Center for Nutrition and Public Policy.
