Patricia (Patsy) Gonzales Week 8 Assignment 2 05/06/2015 Alcohol- A nerve block relieves pain by interrupting how pain signals are sent to your brain. It is done by injecting a substance, such as alcohol or phenol, into or around a nerve or into the spine. Aspirin- Is used to treat pain from inflammation and work by blocking production of pain- enhancing neurotransmitters, such as prostaglandins. Acetaminophen is also effective against pain, but it is not an anti-inflammatory drug. This drug can be taken orally. Lidocaine- Is a local or topical anesthetic that can be applied to the skin or to mucous membranes to reduce the immediate feeling of pain and produce numbness. Lidocaine works by blocking the pain signals sent by the nerve endings on the skin. Morphine- It can dull pain by silencing nerves in the spine that carry pain signals, but it also has complex effects in the pain processing areas in the brain and morphine receptors are found on nerves all over the body. It can be taken as an injection or orally.

Unformatted text preview: Ketamine- Is usually administered as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic by those experienced in administering general anesthetics, in maintaining an airway, and in controlling respiration. NMDAR molecules in cells are receptors for the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, which is important to the transmission of nerve impulses and thus to a person’s ability to perceive sensory data such as pain signals. Succinylcholine- is a blocking agent that produces depolarization at the endplate and binds to extra junctional receptors. The main site of action of neuromuscular blocking agents (muscle relaxants) is on the nicotinic cholinergic receptor at the endplate of muscle. They also have effects at presynaptic receptors located on the nerve terminal. Anectine (succinylcholine chloride) is an ultra-short-acting depolarizing-type, skeletal muscle relaxant for intravenous (IV) administration...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
