While Vannevar Bush’s vision of scientific research presented in Science, the Endless Frontier , raises opinions that are in harmony with points made in both J.D. Bernal’s The Social Function of Science and Michael Polanyi’s Knowing and Being , it seems that Bush’s conclusions are most closely linked with Polanyi’s views, centering around the idea of a community of scientists who are free to pursue questions that arouse their natural curiosity. One of the most central ideas the two share is the emphasis on what Bush refers to as “basic research,” referring to the pursuit of often theoretical scientific knowledge for no immediate practical purpose.
