Islam: in Arabic, Islam means “submission” o Muslim: one who “submits” o Islam is founded in a belt around the Equator, mainly o Over a billion Muslims o We are covering “Classical Islam” o Social organization: o Started in Arabia, now Saudi Arabia It is not all desert There is farmable land, when the rain comes o Tribal nomad: people who move around based on a particular pattern (in this case, “weather”) o Not all Arabians were nomads o In lower South-West corner, land is very fertile, like corn and incense ingredients o Got hold of these farmable goods via Caravan routes By same-route, they received goods from India o Mecca: an important stop on Caravan routes o Medina: another important stop on Caravan routes o Sedentary: there were many more sedentary, or stationary, Arabs than nomadic Arabs o Nomadic and sedentary interaction: Nomads: Look down upon sedentary for having taken the ‘safe route’ Sedentary: Have become worldly, and see contrast between nomads and themselves
