Emperor Taizong (r. 627-629) o By now in history it is normal for ruler to have a harem If you are lucky enough to become one of the Emperor’s concubine’s, and you become favored; you might receive benefits, along with your children receiving benefits o Top of the ‘emperor chain,’ under the emperor: Empress First Born Son KaoTsung (649-683) o Came to power at his father’s death, was a weak emperor o On the deathbed of the emperor, Harem is supposed to go into monastery till death After the death of his father, KaoTsung went to the monastery to find this one girl (Wu) Brought out this girl; KaoTsung’s wife is not bearing children, he deposes her 5-6 years into his throne years, KaoTsung had a stroke, but didn’t die; Wu ruled while he was on the throne When he died, Wu took the throne Empress Wu (c.624-705 CE) o Was a concubine who became an Emperor o Only concubine Empress o Reigned from 690-705- 15 years Was a combination of good luck and shrewd political-izing on her
