Population and presenting problem An inside look at the breakdown and challenges of parents and adult children's relationships in American families. Moving from adolescent to adulthood is a natural life course. According to Erik Erickson’s eight stages of development other than finances and education, there are very few distinctions when comparing race, religion et al. Erickson’s stage 5 - Adolescent period: Identity vs. Identity confusion and stage 6 - Young adulthood period: Intimacy vs. Isolation identifies individuals' reflection on previous life experiences and aspiration to love and the formation of close friendships and partnerships. (Orenstein et al., 2020) When studying human behavior, the eight stages of development serve as an opportunity to identify treatment and intervention plans. (Orenstein et al., 2020) In viewing problems involving mental illness, Erickson's theory can perceive cognitive functioning from childhood to mid-life. In contrast, other theories such as Sigmund Freuds' Id, Ego, and Superego and other scientists' do not. Parents intrinsically invest emotionally, monetarily, and physically in their children and have a stake in their success. However, hovering over children into adulthood creates dissension from the now "young adult."On the other hand, children minimize the positiveness of the parental-child relationship and focus on the negative features of growing up and thereby desires to detach, if only temporarily. On both sides, estranged relations can cause other disorders such as defeat and insecurities, anxiety, and depression et al. (Lendon, 2014) Therefore, it is viable to understand adult children and their parents' relationship at a crossroads and improve upon them by using the evidence- based practices of Erickson, Freud, Beck and other psychologists and professionals. Review of the articles Although it is understandable what to expect at different ages and developmental stages, Erikson doesn't elaborate on environmental factors that complicate human relationships. Parents' input and support can significantly change outcomes when factors such as substance use and abuse,
physical or sexual abuse are known causes of communication breakdown. (Middleton, 2017) However, when unwarranted intervening in adult children's lives where a child experiences no such trauma or abuse, it can be daunting for both the parent and the adult child. At this stage young adults may choose not to involve their parents in their daily life activities, rightfully so. Research has shown that when parents pressure or become invasive in their children's lives (after many attempts of crossing lines and being warned), it can lead to substance abuse or other forms of relationship abuse or control. (Johnston, O’Malley, Bachman, & Schulenberg, 2009) in part, family members serve as barriers and protectors of their children against substance abuse, drugs, and predators. (Leonard &
