07-10-31 1. The First Punic War (264-241 BCE) a. Outbreak of the War in Sicily (264) i. Campanian mercenaries hire themselves out ii. Afterwards decide to take part of Sicily 1. call themselves Mamertines iii. King of Syracuse attack Mamertines 1. they go to Rome for help 2. Rome on friendly terms with Syracuse 3. Rome knew that if they said no to Mamertines, then they would go to Carthage and ask for help, and Carthage would take the eastern side of Sicily 4. Rome decides to help Mamertines 5. Rome sends consul down; Carthaginian garrison already exists in the city 6. General gets angry (General Appius Claudius ‘Appian Way’) a. Saw it as a breach of faith b. Invited Carthaginian commander to a banquet and then captured him iv. Syracuse and Romans ally themselves to push Carthage off of west Sicily b. Capture of Messana and Agrigentum (263-262) i. Agrigentum was a coastal town; Carthage sent their navy and started taking back coastal towns ii. Carthage made a blockade so that Roman troops could not be sent
