Liam Boogar 07-11-26 Week Eight Source Analysis Assignment 1. When addressing the topic of the common fear vs. accepting of death, Marcus Aurelius offers his brutal opinion. Marcus points out that, in the grand scheme of things, we are just instances in time, and that to worry about death is a futile waste of time. His addresses the two practical outcomes of death, an afterlife, and nothingness. In the case of an afterlife, which seems to be what most people hope for, Marcus points out that an afterlife must be nice. In the case of nothingness, Marcus jokingly (or so perceived) points out that we will be released from all the pains and pleasures of life, something that, to most, should be appreciated. He addresses the idea that we only lose the instant in which we die, as we cannot possess the future or past, only what is now. In addition, he suggests that one must live life to the fullest and figure out the world before it is too late. 2.
