Astro 127 ( http://bubba.ucdavis.edu/~knox/phy127-w05/ ) Professor : Lloyd Knox Office: 505 Phys/Geo E-mail: [email protected] Grader : Mike Chu Office: 506 Phys/Geo E-mail: [email protected] Text : An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics , by Carroll and Ostlie, Addison Wesley Longman. This textbook is written as an introduction to astrophysics for physics majors. Its emphasis is on using basic physics to understand astrophysical phenomena. There is enough material in it for a year-long course so much of it we will not use. I’m sorry it’s so darn heavy! The textbook should be used as a supplement to the material in lectures. For many subjects, it has many more details than I will discuss in lecture. These extra details may be useful for you, but in the past students have also tended to let them obscure the bigger picture. I will try to make the bigger picture clear in lecture so that you can still see the forest despite the trees. Office Hours : Phys/Geo 505 Tuesday 3-4 pm. Course Content : This is a course on astrophysics for physics majors. Astrophysics is the effort to understand the cosmos with physical principles. You will learn about the cosmos, and also deepen your knowledge of physics by seeing its application to celestial phenomena. Use of Class Time
